Personal identity, or sense of self, comes from many different places, our name, place of birth or country, parents, adoption, sexuality, disability, gender the list goes on.
We are not born with an identity; it grows and evolves over time. Sometimes life events interrupt this natural process leaving people stuck with behaviours and reactions that are identified with childhood. Whatever the cause, lacking a strong sense of self can lead to many challenges in navigating the world. Depression, anxiety and issues linked to self-esteem are common.
Counselling can provide a safe place to encourage the growth and discovery of personal identity.
